Join me for an Inductive Listening Workshop at AVANT RADIO FEST (“ARF”), hosted by Wave Farm, WFMU, and ARTxFM, November, 2026.
Inductive Listening Workshop Saturday @ 3pm:
Below the noise floor of traditional radio, tiny signals charge the air around our electronic devices. With simple tools, we can explore the hidden electromagnetic voices of computers, phones, lights, and other electronics.
In this 3-hour hands-on workshop, each participant will build a stereo pair of listening coils to plug into any recorder with an 1/8″ or XLR input. Then we’ll head outside for a recording expedition to test our electronic ears. Back at the lab we’ll share our discoveries and celebrate with an impromptu group performance. This workshop will also cover soldering fundamentals and a brief history of electromagnetic listening. (No previous electronics experience required.)
Cost: Festival fee + $30 parts fee.
Tools provided, but participants should bring a laptop, wired headphones, and, if possible, a sound recorder that is not a phone.
